Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport is the largest airport outside of London in the UK. It is also the fourth-busiest in the UK. It began life as Ringway Airport in 1938, saw action in World War II and this year won Travel Weekly Globe’s UK Best Airport Award. There are major redevelopment plans afoot at Manchester, including, but not limited to, taxiway overhauls, an extension of Terminal 3 and a dedicated lounge and gate area for Airbus A380 flights.
Parking
There is both short and long-term parking at Manchester Airport. Long-term parking for holidaymakers is through car parks dedicated to certain terminals, with a short shuttle ride connecting the two. It costs £50 for a week and then £7.00 for every extra day thereafter. The car parks at Manchester are part of the Park Mark safety scheme.
Airport distance and surrounding location
The whole airport, apart from the second runway which resides in neighbouring Cheshire, is contained within the city of Manchester’s boundaries. The city centre is approximately 9 miles distant from the airport.
Transport Links to Manchester
The airport is situated off junction five of the M56 motorway, and a journey to the city centre would take around 20 minutes. Up to six trains an hour run from The Station, Manchester Airport’s transport hub, to Manchester Piccadilly, from where you can pick up services to all over the UK. There are taxi ranks outside all the terminals and the Stagecoach Skyline buses, numbers 43 and 105, run to the city centre.
Conference Facilities at Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport contains both business and executive lounges. Also, accessible through a covered walkway, the 5-star Radisson SAS hotel offers state-of-the-art conference facilities. Meeting and conference utilities are also available in the airport itself, with everything you could need for a successful business meeting.
The city of Manchester
Manchester vies with Birmingham to be recognised as the second city of England. The city itself has a population of roughly 452,000. Manchester came to prominence as the world’s first industrialised city, though now it is viewed as a national centre for higher education, media, the arts and commerce. There is lots to do in Manchester, and with it being the home of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Manchester Opera House, amongst others, it makes for an excellent cultural visit. There is also great shopping at the Arndale Centre and the city is home to two famous football clubs, United and City. There are also two large Universities, Manchester Metropolitan and the University of Manchester. The Manchester nightlife is also rightly revered, with a night out to suit anyone’s taste.
Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh airport is the busiest airport in Scotland and, in the whole UK, the seventh-busiest by passengers. Originally RAF Turnhouse, it was taken over in 1971 by the British Airports Authority and expanded to take commercial flights. Expansion continued over the years, and a terminal extension opened as recently as 2006. Future plans include connecting the airport to the wider Edinburgh tram network and an expansion of the current departure hall.
Parking
There is both short-term and long-term parking at Edinburgh. The operator, BAA, offers “Supersaver” discounts to people who book a certain amount of days in advance. There are regular shuttles from the car parks to the terminal building.

The city of Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the capital city of, and second-largest city in, Scotland, and is also the seventh-largest city in the UK. Edinburgh began life as a fort named Castle Rock, and was also the location of some monarchs’ royal courts during the Middle and Modern ages. Today it is well known for the Edinburgh Festival, and is regarded, due to the prevalence of Georgian and medieval architecture, as one of the most picturesque cities in Europe. Edinburgh is the second most visited city in the UK after London, and there is lots to get up to. Edinburgh Castle is definitely worth a visit, as is Holyrood House. The National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Museum are also in Edinburgh, as well as the Museum of Scotland and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. There is, of course, the famous festival and the city is home to two football teams, Hibernian and Hearts.
