Edinburgh Airport is less than 10 miles from the city of Edinburgh and processes over nine million passengers each year. During World War Two, fighter command took control of the airport and extended the runway to 3,900 feet to accommodate spitfires. Following the war the airport was given commercial status in the late 1940s and immediately began taking passenger airlines. In the early 70s the BAA built a new runway and terminal to cope with the rising number of flights from Edinburgh. In 2005 a new Air Traffic Control tower was completed at a cost of £10 million.

The airport is said to have been built over a Roman villa. The first stages of the airport came from the U.S. during WW1 when they began construction of the first hangers. In 1936, the spitfire prototype was tested there and has been showcased by a scale model of the aircraft on the main road to the entrance.

The town is a former railway town and has retained a lot of the charm which comes along with old British railway towns.
