Aberdeen Airport is the third-largest airport in Scotland, and was first opened in 1934. During the Second World War it was mainly used as a photographic reconnaissance base. Aberdeen Airport’s propinquity to the North Sea and the oil platforms there means that it handles a large amount of helicopter traffic. In fact, helicopter traffic makes up half of the aircraft movement at the airport. There are future plans in the pipeline including ideas to extend the runway by up to 300m, making direct flights to the US and the Caribbean possible. Aberdeen was voted the most improved airport for 2008.

Transport Links to Aberdeen
The A96 Aberdeen-Inverness road gives car traffic access to the airport. Taxis leave from outside the airport and it is a short drive to the centre of Aberdeen. Dyce station is the local rail station, and is a short taxi ride from the airport itself. Aberdeen central station has links to the rest of Scotland and to England. There is also a regular bus service from the airport to Aberdeen, costing £1.30 one way.

There are no proper conference facilities conference facilities at Aberdeen airport. However, there are bookable business lounges in the main building and there are internet access points around the airport. Also, there are hotels close to the airport, the Aberdeen Airport Thistle and the Speedbird Inn, that do offer full conference facilities.
The City of Aberdeen
Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland, population 202,370. Aberdeen has seen habitation for about 8,000 years, but in modern times has large interests in the oil industry and also boasts the largest seaport in North-west Scotland. Aberdeen is notable for its granite, whose quartz crystals sparkles in the sun and give the architecture a unique appearance. The city also has a large amount of green areas and parks, and also boasts a beach for when the weather is warm. Culturally speaking, the Marischal museum holds many interesting archaeological and fine art collections. The local football team is Aberdeen FC, who play at Pittodrie.
Birmingham Airport
Birmingham International Airport is located in Solihull, in the West Midlands. It is the sixth busiest airport in the UK and the second busiest not serving London, after Manchester. In use since 1939, it passed into the control of the West Midland County council in 1960, and has expanded ever since, with privatisation coming in 1983. Birmingham airport was voted the best airport in Europe in the 5-10 million passenger category in 2007 and there are concrete future plans for runways and measures to enable the airport to handle the new larger, fuel-efficient jets that will soon come into service.

There is a large NCP-run car park at Birmingham, which offers parking for around £3.00 a day. The company, like many others, encourages early booking as then they can guarantee much cheaper rates. AHP runs an off-site car park which holds an ACPO award for security, meaning there is good parking opportunities at Birmingham.
Distance and Surrounding Area
Birmingham city centre is situated approximately 8 miles west of the airport. Birmingham’s central location means there are excellent transport links to large motorways such as the M1 and M6, and to the big railway station at Birmingham New Street.
Transport Links to Birmingham
There are taxis to Birmingham city centre from outside the terminal, and a trip to the city centre costs around £16. Trains to the city centre run frequently from the Birmingham International station and the journey takes roughly 20 minutes. Buses stop at the terminus opposite terminal 2 and the 58 and 900 services run into the city centre.

Whilst there are no conference facilities at the airport itself, there are many hotels nearby that do offer these facilities. There are however four business lounges with internet access, with further internet access around the airport itself.
The City of Birmingham
Birmingham, often considered the second city of England, has a population of roughly 1,006,500. It has existed since around the 6th century, and gained a reputation as an industrial powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution. Birmingham is now considered a large base for British commerce.
There is much to do in Birmingham with great shopping in the Jewellery Quarter and at the Bullring complex. There is also Cadbury’s World and the National Sea Life centre and the large Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, which has many interesting holdings. There is also a thriving theatre scene and two football clubs, Aston Villa FC and Birmingham City FC. The NEC and NIA area also close by.
